Re: Question for you
Sorry Soc, must have mis-remembered a previous post re: the BJJ.
Couple of points about Judo et al. In terms of clinch, it's much more upright than wrestling, I've found. As a consequence it's generally more akin to reality situations (including clothes for most part of the year here).
V BJJ - gosh an old one. Rather than rehash the various merits, my own experience is that BJJ has a wider set of skills (guillotines, leg locks, etc...); is evolving rapidly because of its popularity; emphasises submissions more (because positioning doesn't earn you a win), and tends to be more minutely engineered. That physical chess appeals to my anal brain!
BJJ as applicable to reality. Sure thing, lots of it not. But both BJJ and Judo give one HUGE advantage - not panicking if it goes to the ground. Feeling comfortable down there is so important for not wasting energy.

Re: Question for you
Joshua, without a doubt you have to train for the ground. What I try to do in BJJ however is to fight for a dominant position. This was what I was talking about before about going 100%. Apparently we've had complaints from some of the other students about our behaviour, the guy who takes it however is Brazilian and enjoys the contact and just laughs.
I'm always looking for the practical side of anything I do, but also keep it with the boundaries of competition. When I get a mount or whatever I always think 'I'd cave your head in right now' way before I think armbar or whatever. All the stuff we learn I change in our own club anyway!
