I'm working on the follow up to "How to be Your Own Bodyguard" which will be on hard skills etc. So, I think I've got most of the bases covered but would love to get your feedback on what you'd like to see in the book that maybe missing in others you've read.

Over to you

makeshift 'weapons' that can be found around the home,

eg; some cleaning products found in an average home will blind a mugger or burglar, a dry powder fire exstigushers can really stop an attacker before they get within attacking range

I agree with the others by talking about weapons of opportunity around the house, what they are good for, strengths/weaknesses and where on the body they can cause damage or turn a bad situation advantageous for you.

Also, action beats reaction, survival mindset, and maybe some form of physical conditioning?

I would add mindset, as in don't be thinking about ramifications and consequences of your actions, regarding pro-active defense of yourself and family in the house invader situation, in the UK it seems the laws differ when it comes to this, If the invader stands on a drawing pin whilst in your house in the UK your fcuked, am I right in assuming in the US if an invader enters your house then he is fair game ?

To take this down a slightly different avenue, weapons of opportunity could also be used by an invader too if they feel threatened, so a section on not leaving items lying about just anywhere in the home(soft skill?).

example:- burglar is in the kitchen and hears you coming down stairs, there's a carving knife been left on the side. chances are they are going to pick it up if they are not already tooled up.
However i doubt they would risk going in a drawer for said item and risk making more noise.

Thoughts?

Nick, it may be well worth a note in the book about keeping going after you have landed a blow as opposed to standing around to see what happened which does seem to be the natural reaction of a lot of people who are unfamiliar with violence.

Very true Peter. That tends to be a sparring mentality in that you take a shot and see what happens rather than continuing your relentless assault until it's obvious that you've "won".

They are 'fair game", but the use of force has to reflect the intruding action.

For example, if someone is breaking into your home, and they are halfway inside, for example; trying to crawl through a window, sometimes the liberal/PC Jury assigned would frown upon if you had shot that person in the face-brains, while they were "making a attempt"

Even then you may get off with that, that intruding person's family can take you for a sue, as a "wrongful death", and could possibly win.

Many LEOs tell my family, if you shoot, shoot to kill, either drag the body in, or arm the body with a knife-weapon

Thanks for the feedback guys...very helpful. I'll be sure and give a nod to the forumites once it's in print mode. Working on the rough draft right now

Nick

PS: If you think of anything else, let me know.

PPS: Would it help if I put the outline up to see if it inspires any other ideas?

It certainly won't do any harm Nick. I don't see a downside so outline away.
