Crazy heavy bag idea?
Dave,
I'm thinking about how to solo train forward drive as well as power.
I'm wondering about the possibility of hanging a heavy bag on a pipe (structurally sound, of course, and not a water pipe - I'd hang the pipe between 2 4x4 poles about 10 feet apart).
Then I could drive the bag back as I drove forward, assuming my strikes hit hard enough.
What do you think? Worth trying? Or is there an obvious (or not-so-obvious) flaw that makes it not worth pursuing?
JK

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Hope you don't mind me briefly jumping in here Dave!
JK,
That's the exact set up I had in my parent's garage as a kid, using a scaffolding pole and a loop of flat chain, that slid nicely along it, to hang the bag from.

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
hey if anything that sounds like fun. wish i had space enough for that kind of set up. we have done a drill in stu's class a couple of times which involves holding a kick shield against the back and then taking it in turns to hammerfist each other across the mat.

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
It aint crazy .. I used to have two bags hanging from a chinning bar and pushed, palmed, hit, elbowed etc my way all around and through them.. some great swings at you to ensure you have 'stopping' power
Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Muahahahahahaha
Guess what I'll be putting up this weekend...

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Mr CQM - bows, whips, trebuchets youve got a wide range of missle range stuff to choose from there m8
And wheres our trebuchet videos!!!
Nothing wrong with that idea - ive seen a well equipped dojo with 2 rows of bags with that style of swing.
A important thing to note on the REALLY heavy bags the really powerful stuff that lifts them up - ie cowcatching will break the chains fast. Done it 3 times on the massive 5foot radius bag

Ah, Tony, the trebuchet videos.
Sam, Chris (good friend) and I took Ludgar the War Wolf, our 5 foot trebuchet, to the beach last weekend.
Built a big, fine sand castle, and levelled it with the catapult.
The videos did not turn out. Way too small.
And we learned an important lesson - baseballs work much better than golf balls when demolishing sandcastles. So next time, we're coming with a goodly supply of baseballs.
And hopefully, a better video camera.

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Hi JK
I'm struggling to find a way of safely hanging my bag. Yours sounds like a great way of doing it.
Can you definately post some pictures when done so I can blantantly rip off your design.
Cheers

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Sorry, Taz, forgot about that.
Here you go. Pipe mounted (lag screws and pipe flange) to 4x4 posts.
Bag hung from pipe. Pretty simple, actually.
It's not a sturdy as I might like, the pipe has some flex to it so I won't do any standing grappling type stuff with it, but it takes strikes pretty darn well.
If I hit from the side, it swings like a regular heavy bag.
Or I can drive it from one end to the other, about 10 feet total (so about 8 feet useable).
Bag is 100 lbs.

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Nice one JK !!
I've already been to B&Q today and purchased loads of wood as i'm not lucky enough to already have a structure.
I possess zero DIY skills so this should be fun. But it WILL be hung !!
Cheers

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Just caught up with this thread, a bit late I know...
Am going to try somethig similar in my garage, I've got some stuff I can probably use, might test my DIY skills as well!!
Looks like a great idea though, never thought about it before, even though I had got frustrated by the bag just hanging/swinging.
I'll post again in a day or two, let you know how it goes

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Got it sorted, in a fashion...
Didn't have any metal pipe or similar, so I used a hard wood handrail, oval shape in section. Knew it wouldn't slide aswell, but hey, it's not like I punch like a girl, is it?
Got it set up, middle of a 6 foot stretch, lined it up with a fence and wallop! Big right cross. Didn't move at all!! After another couple of punches, I realised the weight was just too much, the chains digging into the wood at the top. Really f*cked of after all the effort, so on the way out of the garage, I gave it a parting shot with an elbow. And guess what? It moved!!
Ha ha ha - I then realised that despite all the aggro, this might be a good thing. Cos if I can shift the bag along with punches aswell as elbows, then i really would be generating some power.
So now I have a training routine lined up for the next couple of weeks.
Ever cloud has a silver lining etc

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Paul - cool stuff.
I'm learning a bunch from mine, as well.
One thing that others here can probably explain better - there is a difference between strikes that put energy 'through" an object and those that put energy "into" the object. So some very hard strikes might not move a bag much at all, though they impact with a lot of good force.
There is good in being able to do both, and in knowing the difference.
And in being able to explain the difference better than I can

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Check out Mick Coups pages - I'm sure there was an explanation to re-bound and 'other' energy types.
Mick I think favours strikes that utilise re-bound energy - aka repeat concept

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Yeah, I seem to remember Dave saying on me than one occasion that for bagwork, you want the bag to shudder, rather than swing, that way you are getting projection/penetration rather than a 'pushing' effect.
As for me, I just punch like a girl

Re: Crazy heavy bag idea?
Thats true Paul.. if you punch with too much of a follow through PUSH it swings, which means kinetic energy not penetrable energy..
look at the american football players with their 'sleds' thats not penetrative its kinetic, the sled is PUSHED.. which is fine if you are TACKLING...
Correct impact is about putting YOUR energy INTO your opponent.. I dont actually want to knock him backwards.. I want him to absorb it so he suffers internal penetrative energy and DROPS..
A right cross punch to the Jaw causes a KO by the BRAIN being shook up because the energy is tranferred into not past the head.
A high percentage of punches thrown on heavy bags in training look like and are BODY SHOTS.. a different punch looking for a different result than a head shot..
wathc people heavy bag training and see how many body hook s are thrown almost automatically.. its as if we know that the size, consistency and shape of the bag equates to a body more than a head...
