On trainings we specially include exercises as much as possible approached to a real situation. We train in the mixed fight, that is both we struggle, and we strike blows simultaneously. We practise fighting work standing and in an orchestra. In summertime necessarily we train on the nature. Completely we exclude contactless work, therefore often we use boxing gloves, wooden and usual knifes, and as sticks and other subjects. We don't adhere to any style as each person should show own individuality as much as possible. On the contrary, we lean against fighting principles of the Russian martial arts.
Was in the army, doing martial arts for self-defense only, not for sport!
Before studies Russian martial art IZVOR, 18 years train Traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do.

I like that relaxed flow and while some might criticise it I can see how it is demonstrative of the system and techniques. I wonder about the history and if this was available to the public in the Soviet days? My understanding was Sambo, Judo, Shotokan karate, boxing and wrestling were about all there was available. I would be keen to read more about the history of this stuff. Perry

Perry, in the Soviet times actually only watered down Sambo, Judo, boxing and wrestling were officially available to the general public. Karate, wushu etc. were for MVD, KGB, military and GRU only. Moreover, even those aforementioned available options could only be practiced within paramilitary sports organisations (Dinamo, Spartak, Trudovye Reservy).

Re Your question, I used to know some people who served in Spetsnaz [VV - Vnutrennye Voiska (Internal Forces), Malinovye Berety], only practiced simplified karate, Sambo and boxing. Never heard of Systema, Izvor and such. It's highly unlikely there were large differences in H2H training in different regiments, as under totalitarian regime everything was standardized and regulated by higher instances. Deviations from set system were discouraged. Only within KGB and GRU there were aficionados of different Eastern systems, general public was denied that. Hell, general public only first heard of kung fu at the eighties!
I may be wrong, but I feel that in truth Systema, Izvor and other so called "traditional Russian martial arts" don't have that long traditions we're led to believe after all.

Sven, thanks for the reply. I was in the DDR in 1986 and discussed this with my cousin/uncle who had served in the DDR Army and Navy and also with some Russian Officers they introduced me to in Wittenberg-Lutherstadt one drunken evening. At the time I was doing Kyokushin Karate and Goshin Ryu JuJitsu as well as the Army H2H stuff, boxing etc. The gist of things was that H2H training for the enlisted man in a regular unit was basic; a little bit of WW2 era style H2H, bayonet work, battle PT with rifles and so on. In other words about he same as what I had been taught in the Australian Army until I went to MPs and chased up extra courses off my own bat.

The claims for a lineage for Systema and so on seem a little like that Scandanavian style that was around a few years ago, Stav. I believe someone rediscovered an Ancient Egyptian style and an African one and made a DVD series on Panther about it. Cheers Perry
