Kids SD genuine questions?
Hi
Quite a serious question this...just had a heated discussion with my missus about Kids self defence, I would like to know what physical techniques you would be willing to teach.
I must say i would be willing to show them anything, i understand we have a duty of care and in NO way condone fighting in the playgrounds, however when we are talking anti-abduction (physical techniques remember) then surley anything goes??
my missus was concerned in particular with the use of headbutts and elbows, and i could see that she is concerned with the use of these techniques on a childs peers (she is an 'untrained' person).
So where do you draw the line? Teach it seperate (anti-bullying, anti-abduction etc) or do we just show everything we deem relevant.
All answers appreciated, thanks

Re: Kids SD genuine questions?
I would always judge each case individually and would never never teach a child who i thought would abuse the skills he/she can learn.
just thought id add that!
I am studying anti-bullying techniques and feel im grasping the non physical side of things, but theres a lot to learn!

Re: Kids SD genuine questions?
On our SDF Instructors Diploma Course for childrens self-defence we catagorise 'kids' into 2 main sections..
junior school and secondary school .. roughly 7-11, then 11-16
these are two very different human animals, as many 16 year olds are large adults..
but NO 9 year olds can be said to be adults in body or mentality.
when a child is faced with a violent adult some pre-historic genetics 'switch' comes into play that they are HELPLESS..
think of an 80lbs child facing a 240lbs man.. THREE TIMES their size.. then think of yourself at say 180 lbs facing a man weighing 540lbs???
its daunting and frankly I have very little faith in 'techniques' for children under 11 fighting off a determined adult.. and any sense of failure will further induce the sense of helplessness.
NOISE AND TANTRUMS are all they should be taught against adults NOT specific techniques, which they will struggle to apply in reality.
SCREAM ... STRUGGLE ... WRIGGLE ... SHOUT never stay passive! and just attack the FACE nothing else.. not groin, arms legs nothing..
thats all I recommend.. sorry

Re: Kids SD genuine questions?
Thats a different ball game altogether..
Pushes, trips and slaps are spot on..
basicially you dont need to turn kids TOO vicious against each other at the younger ages.. their 'fights' are rarely that severe.. not nothing of course but how many under 11 year old school yard fights end in DEATH?
so a good determined defence is often enough regardless of the techniques

I'm not Dave but I'm guessing at his answer.
Playground fights should be exactly that.. playgroundish. Not involving stuff that is majorly painful or harmful. NOR stuff that could get the child into serious trouble at school. How many kids fights really need eye gouges, groin strikes and the like to bring them to a conclusion?
Also, the SDF breaks kids up into groups. As they mature in their teens and have the sensibility to understand what is appropriate and what is not then some of the other techniques and approaches to mindset may come into play.
In addition, when it comes to small kids... let them be kids. They should enjoy their childhood not worry about giving some other kid three adam's apples.
Physically.... it's a low rent move for a kid (not always much better for an adult in the traditional application of hoof in the nuts) they should be physically concentrating on break-away and distance making techniques not trying to scuffle with their opponent.
I'm sure Dave will have a load more to add.

Re: Kids SD genuine questions?
not to thjat Chris.. thats spot on
look NOBODY has died in a playground fight between 2 six year olds..
its never THAT serious..
plus a groin attack on an 8 year old could leave the child sterile or even impotent in later life
its pushy shovey slappy stuff mainly..
in over 80% of the instances simply fighting back has proven enough.. no special technique needed

Ooo, right. But attack the groin if its an adult attacking the kid?

Re: Kids SD genuine questions?
Thats still not a hard and fast rule... if the child is pretty young its doubtful he/she will be able to perform it wel
in many ways I have severe doubts about children under 10 defending properly against ANY adults
There's other methods that are best used first
