At least Cook had the decency to plead guilty but this guy decided to deny his guilt and make his victims give evidence in court.When he was found guilty he cried like a girl.

In UK Prisons there is no segregation based on offence. In fact the officers and other staff are not allowed to refer to a prisoners convictions in public. As a result, unless there is an identified attack leading to a person being placed in a High Risk unit the sexual offenders are placed in general population.

Having said that, a lot of prisons operate a system where the prisoner can make a request to be housed on a specific block. Not always allowed but for prisoners who are likely to spend a considerable time in the prison they are usually accomodated. This has tended to lead to most cat B and C prisons having an unofficial sexual offenders wing.

I've done a decent number of prison visits and even on those occasions where I was not informed of where the sexual offenders had gathered I could immediately tell. There was without fail an atmosphere of paranoia and eerie inspection by the prisoners. Generally the wings are noisy,cheeky, full of lip and bravado. The Sexual Offender wings are almost silent, nothing but whispers and dark corner gatherings. They set my teeth on edge.

That's interesting...over here they're mostly always kept apart for their own protection.

A NEW date has been set for the sentencing of former Haltwhistle karate instructor Henry Wilson Cook.

Last May, Cook (62), formerly of Castle Hill House, pleaded guilty to 14 indecent and sexual offences dating back to 1984.

At Newcastle Crown Court in January of this year he admitted a further 29 charges, including sexual and indecent assaults and possessing over 55,500 indecent images of children.

It is believed the images, discovered by police in Cook’s possession, amount to one of the largest ever seizures of child pornography in the North-East.

At the Crown Court on Friday sentencing was listed for the week commencing May 14.

Cook, currently on remand in Durham Prison, was once regarded as one of the foremost martial experts in the world.

PS,There was a brief report on the local news about two remand prisoners being attacked in their cells in Durham prison.One of them was Cook.

That's interesting...I wonder what the outcome was? I.e. did he prevail and defend himself, let himself get hit out of guilt, or did he get ambushed and his stuff failed?

It was a brief mention on a local TV report.The fact that the attack was reported on TV news indicates it must have been quite serious.

A karate expert, from Northumberland, who sexually abused pupils, including during a lesson on fighting off sex attackers, has been jailed for 10 years.

Henry Cook, known as Harry, also had more than 55,000 child porn images and 600 videos on his computer.

He abused five girls in his class, one as young as 11, in what the judge at Newcastle Crown Court described as ``the most appalling catalogue of sexual depravity which spanned 26 years.

Cook, 62, of Haltwhistle, Northumberland, who has written a critically-acclaimed book on the martial art, even abused one of his young victims during a lesson on how to tackle sex attackers.

KARATE instructor Harry Cook was jailed for 10 years on Friday after admitting a string of sex offences against children dating as far back as the 1980s.

Cook (62), formerly of Castle Hill Terrace, Haltwhistle, was a world renowned expert in martial arts.

He pleaded guilty to a total 49 charges, spanning four decades and involving five victims.

He was also found in possession of over 55,000 images of children and over 600 films.

At Newcastle Court, Judge Roger Thorn sentenced Cook to 10 years in prison. He will be on the sex offenders’ register and be barred from teaching children for life.

One of Cook’s victims described him as "the lowest form of predator" who abused his position of trust.

In a statement after the court hearing, the victim said: "After living with the immense horror for over 20 years, I feel some justification and I'm relieved that people can now see him for what he truly is.

"I feel total disgust and loathing towards him for all he has done, and he is now where he belongs."

Karate expert Harry Cook

A RENOWNED karate expert who groomed a string of young pupils over more than two decades has been jailed for 10 years.

Henry “Harry” Cook gained the trust of his students’ parents at his martial arts lessons before luring his victims – as young as 11 – into secluded locations and convincing them to engage in sexual activity.

The married father-of-two, who is revered in the martial arts world and who has written a critically-acclaimed book, even attacked his pupils during a lesson on fighting off sex attackers.

During the late 1980s police launched an investigation into his relationship with one young girl he was abusing but officers were helpless to prosecute him and he was released without charge.

Despite the warning, Cook continued to attack his pupils, and between 1984 and 2010 targeted five victims.

Cook befriended the girls, groomed them with gifts of perfume, books and skimpy clothes, then sexually abused them in the loft of his home, in his mother’s house, in abandoned buildings and in a dojo – a Japanese-style martial arts gym – in his back garden.

When detectives eventually seized his computer they discovered more than 55,000 child porn images and 600 videos on his hard drive. Now the 62-year-old has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars for the abuse after admitting more than 30 offences.

Sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Roger Thorn told Cook: “You gained an international reputation in the field of karate and you became an influential person, held in high regard by very young pupils.

“The irony of all that is that in training those youngsters you were teaching children how to resist violent attacks from paedophiles when all along that’s exactly what you were.”

Cook met his first victim in 1984 and he introduced her to his family before beginning a “relationship”. He groomed her to the point that she “idolised him, trusted him and even wanted to protect him”.

Cook, formerly of Castle Hill Terrace in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, was branded “devious, sly, secretive, manipulative, self-opinionated and unpredictable” by one of his victims.

She continued: “I just want to stop hurting. I want the bad times to stop and the nightmares to go away. I want to stop anyone else going through, I want this part of my life to be over.”

Jamie Adams, defending Cook, said: “No-one, in particular the victims of these offences, feels that anything I say on behalf of Mr Cook is meant to detract from the harm or the wrongfulness of what he has done.”

In Northern Ireland prisons it's pretty fluid. At times there's the wings for specific sex offenders you speak about. Mostly though they are locked up, effectively segregating themselves.


in Northern Ireland even with the sex offender locked up they still come out of their cells. For visits, doctor/dentist, phone call, even dinner. Granted these appearances can usually be at times when most other prisoners are in their cells, though UK prisons (with their focus on criminal rehabilitation) will have ordinary prisoners coming and going from the wing/landing. Vigilante attacks happen often to sex offenders in Northern Ireland when they go for phone calls/food.

we have several small clubs in ASMAA-SDF who only have ONE instructor.. so thats the one they use regardless of age, gender of anything else

Some teenagers are mature enough to teach.I can see your point about only having one person to do the teaching but that person has to find ways of safeguarding themselves against any allegations of unacceptable conduct.The conduct of
people such as Cook and Hyland tend to tarnish the entire industry and this often leads to everyone coming under srutiny.

the percentage is so small re: Cooks etc that it will probably cause more worry trying to prevent something before it can happen

if you have the CRB's Insurance, qualifications and the trust of your peers etc, then dont stir up potential witch hunts before we have a witch
