Hi Dave

I was wondering if there is any relation between neck strength and and the abilty to be K.O'd? does a stronger neck reduce the likelihood of it happening or not?

Also what do you reccommned for neck exercises?, i was looking at the bridge but it looks like it puts a lot of stress on the spine, whats your views?

Thanks

Given that most boxers and old style pugilists believed heavily that neck strength helped take impact, then YES I do believe in it,..

I know what you mean about bridging, but it is a corker.. start easily with your feet well drwan up and flat on the floor and just lift slightly, just to tense the neck muscles.

I like towel lifts as an extra..

take an ordinary towel, fold it in half along its LENGTH .. tie a heavy bag, bucket or whatever to the two loose ends and put the top of the 'loop' over your head more at the back.. lean forward and do neck lifts that way..

I used to have a 15 inch collar size. Now it's 17 to 17 and a half.

The secret? Large unattractive men trying to pull my head off. I can't recall doing any neck exercises but I have a lot more muscle around there now as a result of groundwork and general violence being done to me by monsters.

I'll second that I'm 6:2 and a slim guy not a gym goer as such I while ago used to be into wrestling in a big way (BJJ Judo no gi etc) and went to the gym a few times a week where they had a neck brace where you could attach weights this with people pulling me using a thai neck clinch etc and neck bridging has strengthened it. I don't do anything now as such but my neck is 16 inch for a slim person that pretty big, seeing my waist is only 33 and take a medium shirt - many standard ones are too tight on the neck and cannot do the top button so I have to get a baggy one.

i personally found neck bridging(forward one head first looking back between your legs with hands free as you build confidence and strength) really works and is a stress reliver. A good solid neck can not only help with KO but also a strong one adds leverage when so one is pulling your neck and a great extra limb for pins etc etc.

Mathew Evanss neck if you ever get to train with him is like a concrete pillar - solid like metal. Can also get a friend to pull it towards them whilst you pull backwards to build the neck and take it right down to the floor like the Greco Romans to build posture and make sure you move around!!

Mine's down to 17" now. A few decades of playing rugby made my neck somewhat sturdy. Not sure why. It's not like you spend hours working your neck, but there you go.

It also made my legs very powerful, but it's not like you spend hours scrummaging either. Bizarre.

Another one is YESs and NOs. Basically just lieing down and pulling you head up. And lieing so youe heads over the edge of the bed or whatever, and ao it hangs then pulling it up.

Ross has got it wrong there though, with what causes the KO. Its not the cartroid arteries

well, there are several ways of inducing a KO... the usual is the shake up of the brain ala boxing... but the carotids can be used for KO's as can several other methods

Just reading an article about Juan Pablo Montoya (F1 Racing Driver)

Reputed to be able to do 300 reps of 50lbs neck lifts

I guess when you're in a car pulling 4.5G on a corner with a 2Kg crash helmet on - you need a pretty strong neck!

Got a 17.5" neck now - been out of training a little while but it went up to 18.5" when wrestling full time with GT -

Did lots of bulling, lots of resistance neck exercises with partner and lots of bridging - although have found bridging to be quite agressive on the neck and upper back

Juan Pablo is just a big girl. To have real neck strength you need to be born Nepalese.
