How Often Do You Train?
I just got an email from Damian Ross - I'm on his list - and this is what he says:
"I love martial arts, when I was younger I would literally spend 6 hours per week in class. When I had my own dojos I would spend 4 hours training and 15 hours teaching per week. When I was ever in training for a competition, about 6 weeks out you could triple that time to 24 hours per week when you add weight training and cardio."
I don't know about you, but I used to train about four hours a day when I was training seriously. This was in my teens and early 20s.
That's on top of teaching others and doing personal training.
Now, as I'm in my mid-40s and have too many commitments, I only train about 45 minutes a day, six days a week.
Even that's 4.5 hours a week. And that's non-stop. No time wasted.
So Ross' hours don't seem that much.
What do you think and how long do you train?

At the moment because if a lack of a lesson to go to or any realy motivation other than health and fitness I train three to four hours a week.
A few years ago when I had goals in martial arts and what have you I used to train 6 hours a week not including runs, cycling to work and ten minutes weights every night....

Re: How Often Do You Train?
I go for about seven or eight hours a week, all told. It's clearly not enough to be fantastic. But I think it's pretty good for someone in their 40s, with a demanding job, post-grad studies, a young family and regular business trips. Lots of mini-sessions around half an hour are the way to go if you have a lot going on in your life...

That's all well, but you never mentioned how often you do it.

Re: How Often Do You Train?
If I'm not tied up on one of my many projects I lift weights 4 times a week for between 45 min and an hour and I teach 2 nights a week which might involve screaming instructions or sometimes mixing it up. I also do about 20 min at home at night before bed either stretching or doing sit ups/pilates/yoga stuff.
I'm not working on doors any more nor do I fight for a living so my training is mainly maintenance based. If something comes up - like the "Deadliest Warrior" TV show for example then I was training 2-3 hrs every day and dieting like a fiend.
Most people in most combat sports train that way i.e. they have an off season and then an on when they're prepping for an upcoming contest.

Dude, Where have you been?
I was on the penultimate episode of Season III. You can find it on Spike's website if you're in the US.

I don't have a TV.
So anything I watch is by chance on youtube.
Re: How Often Do You Train?
I train 4-6 times a week.
I find the older I'm getting, the smarter I train both timewise and quality wise....plus I don't have the time anymore with work and family committments to be able to train for hours on end.
I mix things up with kettlebells (strength or circuits), Hapkido classes, running, sprints, Muay Thai sessions with a friend, Self Protection classes....I'm never bored but I agree with Nick, most of the time training is maintenance based.

I'm not sure you're being entirely honest.

You're right, I meant 46 hours a day.....
GOVINDA, I am not sure that I can reveal the secrets, The SAS, sorry shouldn't have said that, would not be happy if I gave away what I taught them. As a getting a dvd over the COUNTER about TERRORISTs and some episodes of the sitcom TEACHERs I would only be able to pass the secrest if you were dedicated, totally committed, unquestioing and sent me a huge fat cheque.........
