Uppercut revisited

Hello John,
Wondered if I could ask you a question? I know there's already been a thread on the uppercut but I'd like to ask a follow up question, (two questions in one actually).

When you use the uppercut as a pre emptive shot do you use the lead hand or the rear hand?......or either?

Also, do you throw it vertically as the classic Boxing uppercut or do you throw it as a 45 degree half hook half uppercut?

Hi Mate firstly thanks for the question. now regarding the uppercut i throw the uppercut from a short social stance if i'm standing that is. i utilise the rear hand and i throw the punch in a straight line to penetrate beneath and under the jawbone landing with the two big knuckles of my right hand the punch travels no more than a couple of inches to devestating effect. It is an extremely powerful shot its true power lies in the deception employed at the onset of the pre-emptive strike.
It doesnt feel like much on the focus mits but believe me its the db's. Take good care any more info required fire away.

I have plans to release a dvd- at the moment my focus is on publishing my book, and running my martial arts and fitness centre, i also train amatuer boxers four nights a week and we are at the beginning of the season here in the U.k. that said i shall be releasing a dvd or two.

Thanks again for the reply. One more question if I may re the uppercut.

Have you used this on people of roughly the same height as you or is it still good against much taller opponents?
I was just thinking that a palm heel may be better on taller guys.

Ps good luck with the book and I'm looking forwards to buying it when it's released.

In set situations, antagonists will push thier face into yours or lean in to you at that point they are in position for the uppercut. Or you can manufacture the distance you require by deception(use your magination) Any other situation other than in face you wouldn't use an uppercut unless you were very good at reach and speed.

You've answered my question perfectly. I pretty much "get it'' now.... in theory at least. Yes, now that you mention it most aggresors stick their faces into yours in an attempt to intimidate.
I can now see how it all fits together and why you say it's the db's .

Hi John, How do you rate the uppercut followed up with a short crisp left hook to the chin. I personally am really keen on this little preemptive combo and I wonder if you're as fond of it as I am.

Point taken, mate. I guess I'm the type to wear suspenders and a belt.

Its a lovely little combo but remember the follow up will only be needed if you have made a mistake. and then it will depend on your attackers position at the time you follow on.
Always be prepared to follow up or hit the next man/woman!!
