StreetBoxing!
Hi Dave (and everyone)
I know you have made a dvd with regards to boxing techniques for the street (which i have ordered!), I was just wondering what position you have your hand in for left hooks?
What I mean is do you impact with palm side down (horizontal) or with the thumb side up vertical)? its a bit hard to explain in writing!!
I always have my thumb side up, now I know this goes against what many boxing coaches say as they prefer the horizontal impact (or whatever they call it!) but i generate more power this way, however i have broken my hand landing it!
also I have read boxing manuals where they impact the way I do, and most pros if you watch carefully land them my way, I feel that this is better for wider hooks.
just wondered which way you thnk is best?

Si
If you follow the SDF philosophy of Adapt, Apply, Create then you will find and use the way that is comfortable for you.
Bio-mechanically there may be a best/better way of applying the technique, but after six+ years of following "AAC" i find it easier to try not to train what is not in you and just do what comes naturally.

Re: StreetBoxing!
Thanks mate! do you punch??
i prefer the vertical way but broke my hand pretty severley once!
Im trying out cupped hand strikes etc for angled shots, but find the hook generates more power but also this creates the increased likleyhood of further breaks!
oh well I suppose its 'stick to what you know' I will always punch cos its ingrained into me!

Re: StreetBoxing!
good question .. in most punches I have my fist at 45 degrees for most crosses and hooks.
so the thumb is higher than the little finger but not vertical... if that makes sense

Re: StreetBoxing!
It does!
Is it true that holding an item in your hand decreases the likleyhood of hand damage?
Knotted hankie etc ive never tried it!!!

Re: StreetBoxing!
Si, yes i do punch but as a preferences i go for open hands.
I also find using open hands easier and more fluid as i can make them work better for me.
I find it easier to apply open hand strikes with the foot work i like to use.
This works well with the principles of shut down and MHM that i have learnt from Dave.

Most people have a little gap when they make a fist so something in the hands stops the the smaller fingers folding up if you get a bad contact.
A clipper style cylindrical lighter works well.

Re: StreetBoxing!
it was Roy (Pretty Boy) Shaw who popularised the use of the folded hankie
we used to used the old fashioned rolls of small coins you got from the Bank.. they were wrapped in brown paper about the size of a solid 'smartie' tube
works well
