Recovery food
What are the best foods to eat to recover after an illness?
I have just managed to eat a scrambled egg and keep it down which is the first thing I have eaten since last Sunday afternoon apart from a total of one tin of chicken soup spread over three days. Needless to say I am somewhat drained of energy but feeling a lot better than I did.
The only thing I fancy eating is ice cream but I need to get myself going again and I have no experience of recovering from this state before so any advice will be appreciated.... after I have had another nap

Re: Recovery food
Avoiding dehydration should be a priority. Electrolyte drinks are obviously good for that.

Re: Recovery food
Yeah Ade I brought what started as an ear infection back with me but it spread to my face and into my jaw, hence the lack of eating as I couldt open my mouth wide enought to get anything other than lots of codeine in. Damn but the pain was beyond belief!
Thanks Mr Nobody I have kept hydration in mind and stayed on top of it all through.
I'm going to see if I can get through some fruit and yoghurt today.
The upside is I lost 12lbs this week

Re: Recovery food
I recall an old adage ..
The ill soldier needs chicken broth
the fighting soldier needs the whole chicken
Foods that require 'less' energy to digest are better than foods that take time and energy to digest. .. hence the 'broth' idea
You need stuff that has nuitrition not just bulk and taste
But personally I like the drinks that are specifically designed for recovery after illness.. some good ones around. the @metatone' type drinks.. they do work well
If you fancy ice ream eat it.. but why not add nutrious foods to it .. strawberries for example... bananas and so on

Can't really add much to what's been posted. If it's not a matter of keeping things down, I find some wheat toast helps fill and isn't hard to digest.
Edit: plain wheat toast

Re: Recovery food
Hi Peter,
There's some great advice on this thread, and really, I have nothing to add. Except, be very wary of any advice you may receive from Cartmelpete.
He will most probably give you loads of advice on the importance of "eating lots of cock." In my experience, when one is recovering from a severe bout of illness, cock is best avoided.
As is any form of poultry. Hen included. Obviously.
Hope this has been of some help.

Re: Recovery food
I think its important to have a bit of your favourite 'comfort' or 'feel good' foods when overcoming an illness (for me its rice pudding), it helps more with the mental side of recovery than the physical (thats my excuse anyway ) . Re the physical side remember the old 'Complan' drinks, they're quite good. It will help with the lost weight and vitamins and minerals and is a good supplement to the solids you take on board. http://www.complanfoods.com/complan_overview.php

Re: Recovery food
"Comfort!?" "Feel Good!!?"
Dude, this is "Self Protection Dot Com," not " Pampered Little Lord Fauntleroy Has Jolly Fun And Delicious Treats Dot Com."
Jeez, what next? Is someone going to suggest that Peter checks into a spa for a seaweed wrap, a pedicure, and a fullbody massage from "Sensitive" Jason?
One should bloody well hope not. Although, one suspects so!

Re: Recovery food
Sorry I haven't posted but I have been away in a spa
Anyway, the food is irrelevant again as the bloody infection has come back and so I cant eat again.
I shall be checking back for recipes in a few days
