Johnny 'Butt' Butterworth
Hi Dave,
I was just remembering that a while back you mentioned a guy - Johnny Butterworth - who was literally having a fight or three every weekend for most of his life!
I think you described him as a 'psychopath'
Was he a doorman or prizefighter - or just a lunatic, weekend pub brawler?
What was his fighting style - was he a boxer, wrestler, not formally trained etc?
Did he win most/all of his fights or did he lose a lot and just not care?
Anyway he sounds like an interesting character to say the least!! I like to remind myself from time to time that these types of guys are out there...
Thanks in advance,
SammyT

Re: Johnny 'Butt' Butterworth
Hi Sammy
Yes Johnny Butt was a real character ...
He was a former British Lightweight Boxing champ from the 1950's to 1960 who sadly liked a drink.
He lost his British title through drink and eventually his boxing licence for the same reason. He became a bouncer (they werent 'doormen' back in those days ha ha) .. was very handy with his fists, very fast. He also started taking part in unlicenced 'behind the pub' matches
He was always pretty quick to get in.. used mainly quick accurate and strong punches.. the times I saw him, he was never a nasty guy, quite the opposite, but was prone to the 'gunfighter challlenges stuff', and rarely backed down
the 'psycho' bit was when he 'kicked off'.. he was like the tasmanian devil
I dont remember him having lots of losses though
cheers

Re: Johnny 'Butt' Butterworth
Is he the guy you mentioned that was still getting into scraps every week when he was in his 60's or at least up until he was 60 or am I confusing him with another ''character"?
