Mr. Morris, to remind that mine ancient topic about "misticisms in martial arts".
Any comments?

Re: Combat Ki
Yeah, I agree.
I put this only to remind.
Don´t worry
Steve Morris with sure found this type of misticisms in his past.
And today this stuff still in action in current television (Discovery Channel and talk shows, and movies, books, etc).
So, he probably have some thing to share with us.
P.S.: Why Genki Sudo don´t deliver an elbow to their temple or knee to the face?

Re: Combat Ki
I had problems loading the first clip but I am assuming it was more of the same as the second. As for the second clip...well...it was weird!
I've seen stuff like this before and I for one can't readily explain it, but then again I don't really give it much thought...I'm really uninterested. I will admit that it is rather impressive if it is real but I don't see the point.
I can see the benefit if conditioning and I do some myself but there comes a point of overkill IMO. A point where things move into the extreme and kind of overshoot the reasoning. You know...like if 2 aspirin are good 5 must be better.
I want to be able to take a good shot but then again I would rather not get hit at all. I have to assume that I will get hit and I want to be well prepared but I also want to work on my defense and movement to aid in lessening the impact. I want to condition my self so that "my weapons" are like hammers and that "they" do damage rather than focusing on withstanding blows. I want to focus on hitting him rather than him hitting me. Being able to take all that is impressive but it doesn't mean that they can fight. It doesn't mean they can win, only that they can deal better with losing.
I knew a school that somehow had trained their solar plexus to take good shots. It all worked very well when they stood there and prepared for you to hit them. Once they were moving and fighting it was a different story. especially if you time their breathing.
Then again...maybe I'm missing the point

Re: Combat Ki
I think this stuff belongs with kiai knockouts, knockout by staring, knockout by gestures, knockout by balls of chi, dim mak/pressure points, fa jing, and spiritual healing. It’s very staged. It’s like when you see hard chi kung, guys being run over by trucks, hanging huge weights on their testicles—it becomes a replacement for actual fighting. And in that context, it’s got absolutely nothing to do with martial arts.
Martial arts is about combat. I’d want to see this in the context of a fight. I’d rather see them fighting and taking shots rather than standing there and taking shots. And it’s notable that they never take shots to the head—well, they’re not stupid.
As in the Peter Smit vs. Kurosawa knockdown clip, that’s the context you should be testing your shots in. Or, better still, in Muay Thai, boxing, K-1 or MMA.
Here’s a clip of a guy who didn’t really take himself seriously. He wasn’t dressed in a gi, he didn’t claim special powers of ki or chi—he wasn’t a fighter, he wasn’t selling a system or some magical force, he was a vaudeville act. And that’s where this stuff belongs.

Well, Derren Brown proves the point. It's an illusion. At least Brown is an entertainer--he doesn't call what he does anything else.
The whole thing's a sham.

Some good advertising, some good mass psychosis, 100% belief in what he (the "master") is doing is right and working and hey, there You got another super fighter who can kill You instantly with his farting (And that's an idea for you, girls and guys, trying to discover the ultimate technique, for free, I will not charge for that. I would even deny the idea came from me)

Yeah Aaronk: Some thing wrong happened in mind of the people because after all advances in science and sports, MMA fights in real time TV and wise advices of coaches like Steve Morris and others, this mistical stuff remain in action (and selling DVDs around the planet!).
I yet fought (in sanshou rules) against a guy expert in "Hard Chikung" and also a budhist/shaolin man (you are right about religion Sven ), but unhappply to him, face still a open target without "energetic armour".
Mr. Morris, do you had any fight (or "playfighting") against any representant of some type of misticism stuff?

Re: Combat Ki
Actually one of the girls from the combat ki group has been to several of my seminars. While I don't think the taking shots has any practical ap it's very much the real deal...I've punched her full on in the throat and she just looked at me and said "good punch." Terry O'Neill has hit some of them as well when they came to the UK years ago and got the same result.
Now, I don't spend any time on it because I'd rather learn how to hit than be hit, and, it's not going to work for example if you're stabbed but, that aside, her other training is as good, if not better than most of the other seminar attendees every time she's shown up, so it's not the only thing they do.

Re: Combat Ki
thats interesting Nick, good to ahve someone with first hand experience of the stuff we're discussing. I'd like to know if the combat ki woman was able to take punches whilst moving around or was it only when still and ready?

Re: Combat Ki
For Aron--I think the reason people do this is because it's a way of avoiding the fight. It's also a great way of making money out of people who don't want to fight but want an easy option. If you're given the choice between learning a dim mak strike or going into the cage and you're told they both work, which one are most people going to choose?
Nick: I agree with you, it's got no practical value. I used to do all this shit in the 70's: punches to the throat, several guys hitting me at the same time, whatever. Even as part of Sanchin testing, I can remember taking 2X4 shots across the arms, shins, thighs, spine, and throat. And even one crazy bastard got carried away and hit me over the head--didn't have any effect but I was none too pleased. I didn't take kicks to the groin in Sanchin testing, but I've taken lots of them for real, including one off a stallion. No big deal.
I had a whole bunch of photos. I have a hard time getting hold of my own photos these days, but I found a photocopy of an old one from Earlham Street where we used to do all this stuff. This shows me bending a sword in my throat. Or, appearing to bend it. It's a trick. The sword's really bending; it's the way I'm doing it that's the trick. And, if you get it wrong you could be in serious trouble! That's why I say it's Barnum and Bailey.
I even used to put a steel rod between the bridge of my nose and my eye, and bend that. I've done all this shit, but it was just an exploration. It had no practical value or I would have kept it. That's why it annoys me when people cash in on it and make it out to be some supernatural fucking power. Anybody can do it. Couple of little tricks and you can do it.

There's a lot of fear, the idea that the human body is very vulnerable and people don't actually know how resilient it is. That's why things like this appeal to people, because it plays into this fear of being hurt. Some of the shit that people take and survive is unbelievable! We're an animal species, and underneath our cushion of civilization, you'd be surprised how tough and resilient we are.
The training should play to that factor, and not support this other idea that you just get touched on a spot and die. But this combat ki stuff, because it's so isolated and staged, it takes the idea of toughness out of the context of the fight. And that's a mistake.
I include the tempering of the body in actual live fight drills. I don't encourage it as a separate practice in and of itself. Personally, to me this kind of thing has no value. I've thoroughly explored it, along with all the other shit. It's not important.
