Pistol punch

Hi John,

After the Pentagon phase one on sunday I was thinking about the "pistol punch". I liked it because of its directness means it must be usable even in a very confined space - say standing in a queue with people very close to you on either shoulder that might make throwing a hook more difficult. Also the fact that it can be thrown from the pocket allows for a great use of deception and surprise. Ive got to say I feel much more comfortable throwing hooks, and that is what Ive primarily practiced in the past for my preferred pre-empt, but for the reasons above I will definitely be practicing the pistol punch.

Is this your preferred strike? Would you tend to use it even when a hook would also be a possibility? Did you tend to be more succesful with this strike than other strikes and if so why?

Hi Ric sorry for the late reply! The pistol punch (named for its action the same as drawing a pistol from your hip). It is very fast, direct and simple in its application during training. It is of course more difficult to apply if you lack the desire to protect yourself pre-emptively. If you do then this is a powerful punch aimed at the point and under the Jaw. You will achieve a serious KO. You can use the punch as a quick hit before you restrain or before you wrap up or lock up, if thats what you trying to achieve in your job prison, police, security. Of course only as a last resort or a very serious kick off where serious personel defence is required.
For slightly built women or men it is a great first strike.

There are secrets to its power and application!

When using this punch in a real defence situation it can be utilised at very close range. I will have a chat with you about it next time we meet.
I have used many times and it is a clinicle strike( gets the job done) and is hard to detect on CCTV!.

I use a variety of strikes and yes this is one of my preferred punches just one mind you.

Possibly the same, I haven't heard of that one, Just a way really of putting a picture of how the technique is employed into the mind. The punch is performed in a stright line direct to the target the jaw or solar plexus. utilising the double hip made popular by the great Peter Consterdine.

My Boxing coach showed me something he used on doors quite a bit same thing i'd guess.

This punch is very useful but remember you should never ever rely on just one punch its what you train for and practise hard for but you need insurance even if you know you can KO with one blow you should still practise several follow up punches. the first punch is the trigger for a minimum of a four punch combo either hooks or straights so if your practising the pistol punch then always follow up with three or four more hooks visualising three attackers, not one.

I have to say, Steve has made tremendous progress with his punching. Before the first session he couldnt punch at all (Im not sure he had ever thrown a punch before). Now I definitely would be worried about the prospect of catching one off him.

Got to say I really like the pistol punch. The mechanics of it felt very unnatural to me, particularly at first - getting the arm to fly straight was odd, as was the need to stand so straight in order to do it. But I can definitely see it is worth the effort learning.

Ric try it from all angles sitting standing etc I cover this on the punching phase of the pentagon. Remember deception and pre-emption is the key

Yep - One of the reasons I like the pistol punch is because I can see it will be so easy to disguise, and therefore use with deception.

We have been practicing it off our knees a bit so far, and backed against a wall, but we will try it from some more unusual angles! Thanks.

john how would rate the second part of this clip for inproveing speed and power in the pistol punch. i think the hand movement is pretty similar, what do you think?

Yes its a great exercise some of my students practise this regularly every sat morning on their raw training session, I hadn't tried until this saturday after they had finished to see what it was like i prefer to keep tmy feet still in a social stance and put more envasis on exploding the technique out with the power of the hips and arm following.
I can see its real benefits that way.
I really admire and would recommend Ross enimaits workouts and his philosophy of hard graft to anyone regardless of ability and skill level. its just brilliant stuff.
Its gotts be good for the pistopl punch and any other for that matter.
