How will Tommy Morrison go in MMA??
Nick,
Saw this on the Net:
"Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison is ready to make his debut in MMA, with a goal in mind of eventually landing a fight with UFC light heavy champ Chuck Liddell, according to the Arizona Republic.
Morrison (48-3, 42KOs), who recently resumed his boxing career after testing positive for HIV 11 years ago, has a scheduled bout against 340-pound MMA fighter John Stover. The bout is scheduled for Jun 9 in Arizona".
How do you reckon Tommy will go?
He's probably got the best set of hands of anyone going into MMA, having beaten George Foreman, won two World Titles, etc.

Re: How will Tommy Morrison go in MMA??
Mate,
I wouldn't hazard a guess. I have no idea how hard he's been training, what he's been doing or even how old he is.
I'm betting it will be over fast, whichever way it goes.

More on Tommy
Nick,
Yeah, I reckon you're right with 'quick'. He'll probably either punch 'em out quick or get taken down and tied up very quickly.
Hope he's improved since Sly Stallone beat him in the street fight in Rocky V (or 500?).
Seriously though, it could be interesting to see someone who can really bang with technique have a crack at MMA. The good allrounders might still take him down and never let him up though.

I don't see how he can compete in MMA. Sometimes if you are bleeding and your opponent is bleeding you run the risk of mixing blood with open wounds.
So I wouldn't expect many people to be willing to fight him.

He would only be allowed to fight if he has a negative test result (or positive depending on how you look at it!).

Re: How will Tommy Morrison go in MMA??
Was his HIV test result a false positive? It does happen from time to time.
Morrison wins.....but!
You were right Nick it didn't take long - two and a half minutes to be exact - and sounds like it was a farce!!
'When Morrison hit the ring for his MMA debut against John Stover, who weighed over 340 pounds, the crowd of 2500 at the at Cliff Castle Casino almost booed him out of the building'.
'According to The Arizona Republic , there were last minute changes to the rules that made it almost impossible for Stover to win. The fight went from a bout being fought under MMA rules, to a fight that was nothing more than a boxing match in a cage'.
'Grappling was not allowed and Morrison was allowed to wear shoes'.
'Morrison won the bout by way of a first round TKO after landing a single punch that broke Stover's nose, but the former champ appeared to be badly exhuasted after fighting for less than 2 and a half minutes. Stover told the paper that if grappling was allowed, he would have won'.
"If I could have got him on the mat, I would have won easy," Stover said.

Re: How will Tommy Morrison go in MMA??
Morrison has tested negative for HIV and it is rumored that his old promoter tampered with his first test.
Re: How will Tommy Morrison go in MMA??
I dont know.
If he has the power to break a guys nose with one shot then he's obviously dangerous. Maybe the plan is to phase him in gradually. Fighting under full MMA rules from the go would be suicidal. I think he's taking on enough change fighting in a cage, in mma gloves with kicks knees etc allowed.
Stover didnt have to fight him - He should stop fucking complaining.
Is it not PC to not want to fight someone with HIV? I have no idea whether its feasible that you could transmit it through open wounds of the type gained in an mma match. This sounds like one of those things that lay people are scared of that's an urban myth. Their blood has to get inside your body doesnt it? Maybe Damo knows.

Re: How will Tommy Morrison go in MMA??
The whole thing was BS. They told Stover literally HOURS before the fight that it would be punching only. He basically agreed to a boxing match with 4 ounce gloves against a professional boxer. Stover said he took it because he needed the money.
Morrison talked ALOT of sh!t against MMA fighters and then basically goes into a boxing ring with a guy who isn't a boxer. Brave
Also, did anyone notice Morrison's pec implants? Freaky

Re: How will Tommy Morrison go in MMA??
HIV can be contraced by getting blood in to any mucus membranes (Wet bits, i.e. eye/ mouth/ anal canal etc)
It is however hard to transmit this way (you only have a 1/300 chance of getting it through unprotected sex with an infected person).
However there have been cases of HIV tranmission in households between fmaily members where blood from the infected person has gotten into the membranes (eyes or mouth) of another fmaily member.
HIV is alson contained in (almost) all body fluids, though amounts in tears and sweat are tiny and represent almost no risk (you could win the lottery rollover a couple of times before your odds of catchin HIV this was would be the same).
Basically i would not want to be putting fingers into an infected persons blood. If there were any break in your skin then it really increaes the chances of transmission.
I'm no expert on the subject but will ask about specific risks of transmission if anyone really wants to know.

Ray Mercer didn't fair so well in the crossover, I don't expect "The Duke" to do much better. One double leg and it's all over. I would like to see someone like Kermit Cintron compete after he'd trained in BJJ for about 2 years.

Hi Gents,
Rusty wrote:
Kermit has expressed strong interest in competing in MMA.
Besides boxing, he apparently has a strong background in wrestling. I heard that he is very comfortable on the ground. If this is the case, throw in a couple of years of MMA-applicable BJJ with a dash of "Anderson Silva-ish" muay Thai into the mix, whoa nelly, I believe Kermit would do quite well in MMA.
It would be cool to see a legitimate world champion boxer crossover and succeed in MMA too.
Take Care,
Lito
