i was wondering how do i create a strong but fast jab? in the ring most of my opponets are reasonably taller than me. i always move in behind my jab but use it more as a distraction( block their vision) because i dont have much behind it yet. So this is where you come in Twisted Evil i want them to fear my jab and i want them to feel it before its even seen. so what are the body mechanics i need to pay attention to, should i just train it for speed and the power will be there? any info/ ideas that you feel are relavant in creating a fast and powerful jab are welcome.

To train for an effective jab you first have to look at your body mechanics it is important to get body weight into the punch turn your left hip to the right whilst pulling back your right shoulder. Then punch out in a straight line as if your falling behind the punch this is the straight left it is better than a jab because it is easily accessible. The jab is a chipping away punch the straight left a knockout blow. To increase the speed and quality of the punch so it is fast and to the casual untrained eye looks like a jab. use a medicene ball and launch it against the bag from your normal stance. This will help you start to learn explosive power, the art of good solid clean punching skills is relaxation. There is a great website www.rossboxing.com peruse that. Ross is an expert in the field of power punching. There are some great clips on his site.

Some excellent points here. Its hard to explain, but body weight behind the punch is key. You can easily knock someone out, with your weaker hand if you use proper mechanics. Some useful tips, like just before you punch with a straight jab, turn your jaw towards your shoulder. It makes for a more efficent punch and can protect you from a counter, i.e left jab, right counter.By turning your jaw towards your shoulder, it brings your shoulder closer to body, thus you are striking with your whole body. Try stepping into your punch. Thats why some boxers use a feint jab, your setting up your opponent. Sometimes just pretending to drop your guard slightly helps, to set your opponent up, for a straight jab, but you must use your whole body to be effective.

Relaxation is key. A lot of martial artists think that boxing is about being aggressive, etc. Relaxation in your punches and your mind is key, with correct breathing. You wont last very long without these components. Good boxers use very little if any tension when striking. Hope this helps?
