BJJ as self defence system
Attached is a link to a vid from late 2011. It is getting some serious play at the moment as Ryan Hall has been very vocal recently about the cultish behaviour inherent within martial arts and the loss of integrity at the expense of success in some quarters. (take a look for lloyd Irwin online if you want more info)
I'm actually a fan of what Hall had to say. I agree with his open letter (24 pages long!) in most regards.
I'm posting this purely because it is advocated as an example of how BJJ is a self defence system. That made me spit coffee all over my laptop this morning.
To be clear, I've got no issue with what happens to the drunk bloke at all.
Ryan Hall and drunk guy
p.s. spot the obligatory annoying woman who can't help but escalate and inflame the situation then get involved trying to supervise and orchestrate the responses. My next article is going to be entitled " Why women need to shut up and get out of the way!"

Re: BJJ as self defence system
By law, since the guy gave him permission to kill him, wouldn't Hall be able to knock him out without getting arrested or prosecuted?
I realise it's not the UK, but surely the law must be similar in that regard?

Nope, the law concerns itself with the actions of the accused and whether they hold the necessary elements of the offence. If it is felt that Hall wasn't acting in self defence i.e. unreasonably in light of the threat posed then he is in the frame for prosecution.
Hall would have some questions to answer about his actions at the end of the event.

Why did it take so long to sort it, surely knitting a scarf for a kitten would take as long ? thus proving knitting to be a RBSD system

Re: BJJ as self defence system
A number of styles and systems would have got the same result or better. Why does BJJ have to be shoved down our throats as the awesome one??
Mr Hall should have left the guy alone once he got outside. Or, as the guys friend seems to be reasonably successful at blocking him, waited for the cops.
Just my opinion.

When all you've got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
In any event, it was primarily the responsibility of the manager of that premises to get rid of said dickhead. Perhaps by the amazing expedient of calling the police early on.
They gave him what felt like days to access a weapon which, if he hadn't thought to bring his own, were all around him in a restaurant.
If you have to get involved, why not you and your mates just bundle him out the door and keep it locked until the police arrive?
Alternatively, you could writhe around on the floor like a prick....
