Re: New Book is out now
Ade,
That depends on many factors mate. If it sells well enough on Amazon some publisher may well approach me about doing it but the negotiations then begin about who retains the electronic rights etc.
The publishing world is currently going through a mass upheaval much like the music industry did when it became easier to download them than go to the store and buy an album to get one song you liked.
Barry Eisler, author of the Rain series, for example just turned down a five hundred THOUSAND dollar advance choosing to self publish. Electronic books are now outselling their printed counterparts at about 1,000 to one. David Morrel of First Blood (Rambo) fame has bought back the rights to all of his stuff and now self publishes.
There is still some cachet attached to having a publisher put your books in the stores but it remains to be seen how much longer that will be the case.

On a side note, the John Rain series is awesome and I reckon will definitely appeal to members here even more than Jack Reacher.

Re: New Book is out now
Hey, hey!
No-one can appeal to me more than Jack Reacher! Except maybe Nick himself but that's another matter.
Nick,
I had no idea that online books were becoming so popular internationally.....after all, we've just had some new thing called "television" introduced in NZ. What happened to tucking into a good book and turning a few pages? Has that now become too hard for some people?!
How does reading off a kindle etc affect your eyes when compared to reading from a page?

Re: New Book is out now
Mr Nobody: The Kindle is genius in its conception in that you can read it just like a book i.e. in direct sunlight, and it doesn't differ from a book. The I-pads and other electronic readers are not like that and sunlight and long reading sessions take their toll.
I still like books and there are some that just wouldn't work on the electronic format very well like workbooks etc.
Never did I think I'd like Kindles but I bought one rather than schlepp the usual five paperbacks I read on a flight and fell in love with it. I'm in the process of moving right now and 50 cartons of books had to be packed and moved. In future I can have nearly all of them on one Kindle!!!
Ade: All your stuff is archived on a Kindle mate so if you delete it, or lose your Kindle, your archive still holds a copy.

Thanks Nick for clearing that up.

Re: New Book is out now
I can just imagine the phone app that Nick comes up with
Coup d'etat - Sync all of your plans to overthrow banana republic dictatorships into one easy project management tool.
Head Shot - An efficient algorithim for working out the speed, trajectory, wind differential and time lapse of the perfect kick to the head.
Bag a Crusty - Tracking device to let you know where the biggest group of unwashed, crusty, mouthy and belligerent "protesters" are at any given time so you can corner them and patiently explain the logical faults in their conceptual framework.
the list goes on and on.... feel free to add to it!!!

Re: New Book is out now
Nick - good luck with the book, mate.
Is it as profitable for authors to self-publish for Kindle, etc (I've got a kindle AND an ipad, me! ) compared to being published via a normal publisher?
Can anyone just publish via Amazon like your book?

Re: New Book is out now
Dave,
Yes, there's an interview (try Google) with Barry Eisler on his blog about why he turned down 500,000 dollars to self-publish. (keep in mind he's an established author with a dedicated following).
You can self publish with Amazon but there are hoops to jump through. I recommend going to look at the self publishing section on their web site.

Re: New Book is out now
Maybe the smartphone app could be about how to score two chicks at the same time? Nick seems to be a master at that.
