Ghurka knife techniques
Hey Nick,
Watching you and the Ghurka fella going at it got me thinking.
Watching the knife portion of the programme, your techniques were obviously well drilled and deliberate...whereas the Ghurka looked like he'd been handed a knife and told to "go hit the enemy with it"...if you get my point.
It got me wondering.
Is there a set "offensive knife system" taught to the Ghurkas?
...or do they rely on the fact that most recruits have grown up handling a knife from an early age, and ergo should be proficient in it's use?
cheers bro,
Ade

Re: Ghurka knife techniques
He claimed there was but, like you Ade, I saw no evidence of it. I think Kukri must be the Nepalese word for "bent machete." A lot of people on the face book page dedicated to the show were raving about the kukri but from what I saw he didn't do anything any untrained yob given a machete wouldn't have done.
On top of that you have to take into consideration you can't, despite people claiming to the contrary, stab with it. Now, before everyone starts wailing "yes you can" let me just say yes, you can as long as you don't run into any resistance. If you hit bone, webbing or a belt buckle etc, good luck...your hand will slide along the blade and all your fingers will end up on the deck.
While I like Kukris personally, I just don't buy into the hype.

Re: Ghurka knife techniques
done some digging....
i have it on good authority (from an ex-colonel in the regiment) that there is no formal training.any training is done as kids using the knives as tools every day and any combat skills are passed down from fathers, uncles etc...so styles often vary from area to area.

I don't know what to think now Ade because over on Den Martin's site they have this up. Check out the pics and it would seem they are indeed practising formally...

Re: Ghurka knife techniques
I may be wrong, but i have a suspicion that those pictures are of Gurkha in Britain preparing for a demonstration....maybe
I've found a few online references to knife skills being learnt at a very early age, which would fit in with the Gurkhas already being a "ferocious and skilled" fighting force before the British Forces encouraged them to join the East India Company in the early 1800's
I may be back with more...
(also waiting to hear back from one of the goto Kukuri guys in the UK)
