Pull up alternative?
I travel lots so I have a fitness regime that I can do without any equipment. The only thing is pull-ups. Its usually pretty easy to find something to pull up on but occasionally I am at a loss.
Any suggestions on an alternative that I can do without equipment. The closest thing I can think of are handstand pushups.
Thanks

Re: Pull up alternative?
I once wrote a small booklet about training without equipment, and pull ups was one we struggled with.. the best alternative was lying pull ups
Put a brush handle or similar over the seats of two chairs, or a chair and a bed, lie of your back, reach up and grab the brush handle near to where it is resting (Not in the middle it would break)
keep your body stiff and do your pull ups works well, and you can put a large bag or something on your chest to increase the resistance

thanks Dave,
Ill give it a go..
do you still have this booklet. I could use a few different ideas for bodyweight exercises to mix up my routine

I actually just came across this guys website a few hours ago... im going to make his door frame pull up gismo and see how it goes. Im thinking I may be able to figure out how to rig something up just using rope since i travel with a length of rope anyway. Not that 2 short lengths of PVC adds much to my backpack... but Im an compulsive minimalist

Rope (or towel) pullups are good for the grip...

Re: Pull up alternative?
yeah, i've been using towel pull ups for a whaile now. I actually learned that from an interview I saw with 'The Rock' (WWF.. just in case you have been living underneath..um, a rock) and how he trains.
Re: Pull up alternative?
A good alternative is also a leather or denim jacket thrown over a door lintel, bar or limb. It's an old Judo training trick which is awesome because it's exactly what you'll be grabbing when you compete/fight.

Hi FASD,
I use a pair of Lapis Rollyballs a lot, although you'll still need to find somewhere to hang them. This fella hangs from a pair and then holds a pair in front of his, ahem, own balls a second after at around the 01.20 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZLeAkwtF_U&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Hope that helps.
Take good care,
Zak
