Ok...so I've been reading up on some good books recommended by people on the Jack Reacher thread and it got me thinking what are your top five self defense/martial arts books you own or have read? (This can be either due to the actual content or whether or not it was particularly influential at a time during your martial journey)

For me...and in no particular order

1. The Truth About Self Protection by Mas Ayoob

2. American Combat Judo by Bernard Cosneck

3. Four Shades of Black by Gavin Mulholland

4. The Karate Dojo by Peter Urban

5. This is Karate by Mas Oyama.

Wow that's a good one Nick!

1. Fred Neff's Self Defense Library - a handful of titles I took out of the local library when I was a kid, I actually learned some basic holds and throws that saved me in a few scrapes

2. Mental Training of a Warrior by John LaTourette - this was written before he went off the farm and became the "Speedman" actually a pretty good book with decent advice on technique and mindset.

3. Cold Steel by John Styers - I loved the unarmed combat and stick sections of this book and the emphasis on simple combinations still influences me today

4. Living the Martial Way by Forrest Morgan - a great book for people who want to delve deeper into the martial arts while keeping them martial

5. Cheap Shots, Ambushes, and Other Lessons by Marc MacYoung - this book actually influenced my way of thinking, MacYoung's writing on how different people view the world allowed me to move ahead at work and de escalate far more fights than I ever got in

Hey Nick,

Cracking question. There are probably too many to mention but I'll throw out the ones that come imediately to mind as having an effect on my thinking.

- Put em down, take em out by Don Pentecost. Opened my eyes to the reality of bladed weapon work.

- How Dangerous Men Think by Brent Sanders. Every other book on "female" self protection and defence comes a distant second best.

- Dead or Alive - Geoff Thompson. Still valid and viable all this time after its original publication.

- TravelSafe - Peter Consterdine. Packed with hints and tips on how to travel safely.

- Self Defence Manual - Martin Dougherty does exactly what it says on the tin. Practical, comprehensive and the best all round instructional manual on how to keep yourself and others safe.

there are a million more.. "Dogs Don't Know Kung Fu", "I thought you'd be bigger" , Be your own bodyguard" etc etc. All good food for thought.

cheers

@Chris: Mate, my only issue with the Folsom book is that in prison they're limited to weapons that stab which they do over and over. Toothbrushes, bedsprings, celophane heated and other shivs don't get edges put on them so there's almost no slashing. How's that going to work when you're up against someone armed with a box cutter?

Hello Nick,
Remember all those Black Medicine books that came out late seventies/early eighties? During a blitz by federal police they were taken off the shelves in the martial art shops here in Australia. One of the best techniques was if attacked in a street you pick up a feral cat and throw it at the attacker......valuable advice! lol!

Hi Nick,
They are authored by some guy with a nice Japanese sounding name, wouldn't be surprised if in reality they were written by someone with a name like Maynard Krebbs who lives in Patterson, New Jersey. Wouldn't be the first time..... at the same time the raids were on there were a few "poor man's James Bond" books as well. Putting a fish on top of a car muffler was one of my favourites.......phew!!!!! lol!

It was a westerner that wrote 'em, can't remember his name now though.

Same with the John f Gilbey books they were written by Robert Smith, of The Cure. Smile

Not really, Robert Smith, a historian, though god knows why he made those stories up. some people believed them though.

Says a lot about the intelligence of Martial Artists I guess.

Karete dojo, really? Choki Motubu was a giant with monsterous hands or some such nonesense lol

He was a midget from an upper class family.

I picked up on that Robert Smith thing straight away...... cheers

Funny thing about the couple of books Gilbey did bring out, he was sort of on the right track but mixed alot of fantasty with reality......just like Count Dante I suppose. I'm thinking of bringing out a MA book of forbidden secrets under the Oriental moniker of Hoo Flung Dung.

That's if the cat does kick/scratch your arse first.

Then you maybe inclined to drop your hair ball weapon.
